Libya: UK Apache attack helicopters launch first strikes

British Apache attack helicopters have been used to strike targets in Libya for the first time, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The RAF Apaches hit four targets near the Libyan town of Brega during the latest wave of Nato strikes against forces loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the MoD said.

Earlier this week, the Defence Secretary Liam Fox acknowledged the "increased risk" attached to the deployment of attack helicopters, but stressed they would play a key role in bringing a halt to the dictator's attacks on his own people.

The use of Apaches has alarmed some MPs about the prospect of an escalation in the conflict and the danger to British lives.

The Apaches attacked and destroyed two military installations, a radar site and an armed checkpoint near Brega, the BBC reported.

It said that French Gazelle helicopters also took part in simultaneous attacks on different targets in Libya for the first time.

A Ministry of Defence statement said: "UK Apache Attack Helicopters have taken part in coordinated operations over Libya as part of Nato's Operation Unified Protector to protect civilians under UNSCR 1973. All of the aircraft recovered safely to HMS Ocean. Further details of the operation will released in due course."
