As buzz builds about Gov. Mitch Daniels' potential run for the White House, following are excerpts from the national media in the wake of Cheri Daniels' speech last night to the state GOP's spring fundraising dinner at the JW Marriott hotel in Downtown Indianapolis:
'Honorary Hooters girl'
>> By New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleny: "(Cheri Daniels) showed a video of her driving a dump truck. ('I just want to know now, where do we go and get a beer after work?' she asked her fellow workers.) She showed images of her time as a guest at a prom for senior citizens. ('I’d recommend a few whiskey sours,' she said.) And she showed a framed picture of her at a restaurant. ('I am an honorary Hooters girl,' she said.)"
Another nickname
>> By ABC News reporter Ben Forer: "Cheri Daniels spoke about her cow-milking expertise and preference for the music of country singer Keith Urban, but offered no hints about her husband's plans. At a state Republican Party fundraiser, Indiana's first lady even told the audience that one of her nicknames was 'pig whisperer.' "
Laura Bush connection?
>> By USA Today reporter Cat Camilla: "CBS reported, citing unnamed sources, that former first lady Laura Bush has telephoned Cheri Daniels to encourage her to support a presidential bid for her husband and to share advice on how to define a role in the campaign."
'Everyone has a voice'
>> By CNN.com political reporter Peter Hamby: "We are talking, we are having a lot of talks," (Cheri Daniels) said of the deliberations with her husband. 'It's not just me. I have four daughters and we have three sons-in-law, and everyone has a voice. We are still talking. You have good days and bad days. One day you feel one way and another day you feel different.' "
Who would be Mitch's VP?
>> By Atlantic Wire reporter Elspeth Reeve: After the GOP event, the Indiana governor joined dozens of students at a bar a few blocks away, Real Clear Politics' Erin McPike reports. They asked the former budget director under George W. Bush 'who he'd pick for vice president if he were to run, and -- continuing on a Bush theme -- Daniels told them he'd choose former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.' "
