To believe Lady GaGa, who sings in her latest single, “Judas”: “I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel. But I’m Still In Love With Judas, baby”, she is not really trying to question the Catholic faith, but rather to celebrate it.
This is surprising since Judas is not exactly the most loved Christian figure, as the one who betrayed Jesus and delivered him to Roman soldiers. That doesn’t matter to Lady GaGa: she writes her own story and she’s the master of her own destiny. In fact, Lady Gaga calls her “Judas” video “revolutionary”.
For example, on MSN Entertainment Canada she says of the video: “In fact, the video, in essence, suggests that forgiveness and betrayal go hand in hand. The clip puts the fate above all things and takes advantage of the mistakes that you make in your life are in fact not errors, it’s just the way you fulfill your destiny.”
“I want to let the video speak for itself, but I can say that the theme of the video and the way I wanted it to be made to resemble a Fellini motorcycle movie, where the apostles are in a modern Jerusalem. And I play Mary Magdalene, and I drive to the city where we meet Jesus, and I’ll let you discover the rest.”
However, Lady Gaga seems to want to avoid controversy: “Someone once told me, ‘If you have no shade, so you’re not in the sun’. So the song talks about washing the feet of both good and evil. Understand and forgive the demons of your past to move towards a wonderful future. I just love strong and aggressive metaphors. So it’s a provocative and aggressive metaphor, but it’s just a metaphor.”
To defend oneself even before the battle begins, you have to wonder if Lady Gaga herself truly believes in what she has done and perhaps she has gone a little too far. Time will tell!
