Beyonce's 'Run the World (Girls)' Video Premieres: Watch

After creating classic clips for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," "Crazy in Love" and "Ring the Alarm," Beyoncé makes a triumphant return in the elaborate music video for new single "Run the World (Girls)," which premiered during "American Idol" tonight (May 18).

The Francis Lawrence-directed video finds Beyoncé navigating through an apocalyptic world and leading a determined army of supporters while sporting a slew of eye-popping outfits.

The music video was originally set to premiere last Friday on Vevo, but received the "Idol" premiere less than a week after judge Steven Tyler's "(It) Feels So Good" clip debuted on the show. "Run the World (Girls)," which relies on a sample of Major Lazer's "Pon De Floor" and was produced by Switch with additional production by Beyoncé and Shea Taylor, is the first glimpse of the singer's highly anticipated fourth album, "4."

"It's definitely riskier than something a bit more…simple," Beyoncé told Billboard.com of the single. "I just heard the track and loved that it was so different: it felt a bit African, a bit electronic and futuristic. It reminded me of what I love, which is mixing different cultures and eras -- things that typically don't go together -- to create a new sound."

Beyoncé will once again command the spotlight this Sunday night, when she is honored with the Billboard Millennium Award at the Billboard Music Awards. The sinerer will receive the honor at the May 22 show, which will also feature performances by Rihanna, the Black Eyed Peas, Nicki Minaj and Lady Antebellum, among others, and will air on ABC at 8-11pm ET/PT from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
