Now Both of Us Have Gotten a Name Change!

Many of you may be surprised that Nikki's legal name has never been Nicole... until now. For those new to this blog, no - Nikki is not a transsexual. And no, we didn't get married. This is one of those old-fashioned "I hate my name" name changes, coupled with a removal of her married name due to divorce.

Nikki has hated her given first name for as back as she can remember. Part of the reason for this was due to her abusive mother screaming that name nonstop during her childhood. That, and the fact that her mother named her after a song which talks about her making a husband happy. Ick. Nikki is very much a lesbian, and in the past, she did try to make her husband happy (even though she didn't find him attractive in the least), only to be repaid with abuse of almost every kind there is. No, I'm not telling you her old name. I'm not even allowed to say it!

Her middle name was Nicole. It's now her first name.

Her former surname is one I won't reveal either, same as I don't speak of my old name. Suffice to say, it was her married name. Since she's been divorced for over two years, it's high time she got rid of that old name. Now her last name is the same as mine. (I identify myself only as "Amy K" on this blog, due to a couple stalkers/harassers who somehow summoned up enough intelligence to type my name into a search engine. Just look at the Facebook badge on the right to see my name.)

Nikki was so worried that the judge wouldn't grant her name change for some reason. She had no problem at all. She was in the courtroom for about 15 minutes, while I watched Skylar in the hallway. Then we went downstairs and she got her certified copy of the name change order. We then headed to the Social Security office, and we saw many of the people who we saw in the courtroom. Next week, she'll get her license changed, which will only cost four dollars. That was way cheaper than we expected.

Nicole means "victory of the people." Our last name means "heart" in German. Put them together... let's see... Victorious Heart. I like it!

Nikki has a profound sense of freedom now. She's finally free of the first name that's plagued her since childhood, and the surname that's followed her around for over ten years. I'm so happy for my sweetie. Go, Nikki!

I Made a Vlog!

Yes, it's true! I think it may be a bit boring to watch, and unfortunately, the camera we have is not the greatest. And wow... is my voice that low? I think I could get it a bit higher. My voice tends to get lower when I feel "on the spot." When being on camera is more of a natural thing for me, I think my voice could be free to be higher... I hope.

Anyway, watch this, and then go over to my YouTube channel and subscribe, leave a comment, what-have-you. Thanks!

Letter From Mom

For those who don't know, my mother still doesn't accept the fact that I'm a transsexual. It's been over seven years now, and she seems no closer to coming around than she did then. She still calls me by my old male name, though she knows it was changed a few years back. She refuses to even write the name in correspondence.

Below is a letter that I received late last week. I'm going to write it here, then write my reply, and type it in here too. A lot of the things she states she heard is just untrue. Someone is exaggerating. Anyway, here's her letter to me.

X (male name deleted),

Last week, Dad took Grandma back to Nebraska to see her sister and nieces. He had a good time until his cousins and aunt confronted him about your letters to them. Supposedly, you told them that we had thrown you out and disowned you. I guess you had a few especially nasty things to say about me. I really didn't think it was possible to break my heart anymore than it is. This is your decision to pursue this kind of life. Life is so hard already, and you're only making it harder on yourself. You can't deny that you're making yourself unhireable. An employer has more than enough issues with employees without taking on the burden of hiring a transvestite.

You are so positive that you're doing the right thing, but I really worry about what will become of you. We won't be around forever, and Dan and Laura are really not inclined to help support you. They have their own families and problems. You have taken their brother away, as you have taken my son away. This is your own choice, you don't ask your 93 year old grandmother to finance a sex change. Even if she could, she wouldn't do it. It goes against everything she has lived her life believing.

Please stop sending pictures and trying to force a relationship with these people. They are embarrassed and feel badly for us. I don't know how to make you see this. They are all parents and know how we must feel. All parents want their children to be happy, but your lifestyle is just really hard to get past. Each person's sexuality is a very private thing, and really should be of no interest to others. You're trying to force people into acceptance but that can't work. They don't wish you ill, but at the same time they don't want or have an interest in this. I know I can't make you see the effect you're having, because this is the life you've chosen for yourself, and you've convinced yourself it's right. But this is your own life, and these decisions are yours. You can't change how people think.

I can only hope that you can find people that feel the same way that you do, so you're not alone. You have to have something of your own to fit your life. We can't fit because this is just too much to get past. Because you are our son, it's really so very very hard. It is the heart break of our lives, because we literally don't know how you'll end up, and how you'll support yourself. I have a hard time seeing a good future, you have no job, no insurance, no prospects, no retirement, and no savings. You can't live in a bubble, you have to fit in the world as it exists and not how you want it to be. I don't know how to make you see what's right there. This is your life right now, there is no second chance. You only get to do it once, and when you look back, it's really such a short time. I don't know if I've given you anything to think about, but I'll never stop hoping that I have.

Ma

*sigh*

Dear Mom,

I was very surprised at what you told me in the beginning of your letter. I have never said you kicked me out or disowned me. You took me in for several months when Vanessa was about to sell her house, and after Nikki and the kids went into the safe house. I had no money, and you and Dad took me in and fed me, rent free. Then I chose to move to Michigan with Nikki and the kids. These people (who I don't know and have never talked to) misunderstood, or were exaggerating. The only people I've conversed with on Dad's side of the family, are Grandma, Candice (though not for many months), and Deanna (once, about a year ago). All I told them is that you don't accept or understand why I made the change that I did. I don't know Dad's cousins, and unless it's Aunt Edna, I don't know the aunt of his that you mentioned either. I'm very sorry that they upset you and Dad, but I never told anybody what they claim.

The work situation is an issue that I've been struggling with for years. Yes, there is a stigma attached to being a transsexual, and it's something I have to deal with. Like you said, I didn't make this world, and I have to deal with it and get by as best as I can. Also, I am not a transvestite. A transvestite is someone who dresses in clothing of the opposite sex, and acts in that role, and they later return to their lives and act as their born gender. They typically don't change their name or consider surgery. Transsexuals (note that I have mixed feelings on this term, as many focus on the last three syllables and see it to be a 'sexual' thing) usually take hormones, change their name, and some seek surgery.

Please believe me when I tell you that I have never asked Grandma for money for gender reassignment surgery. I did mention that I wanted it, but had no money, and that was that. Also, please realize that Grandma does accept what I'm doing and who I am. No, I don't think she is any better than you are in any way. I don't know how or why she can accept when others can't. Everyone's different, I suppose.

Yes, I'm no longer representative of any form of son or brother. I can't imagine what such a loss must feel like. I won't apologize for being who I am, but I am sorry for your pain, as well as for the rest of the family. To grieve is natural. I have changed in so many ways. My friend Chris took it hard for many years. Yet, Steve and Daria got through it after a brief adjustment period. Everyone is different, and everyone feels things differently.

As far as sexuality being a private thing, this doesn't apply here (apart from me and Nikki's relationship). This is about gender. I am living the life of a different gender than I used to. The way I feel inside never matched the way I look on the outside. I've felt this way for as far back as I can remember. I was always afraid to say so. Afraid of being ridiculed by other kids, afraid of being punished as a child for acting in a way I shouldn't. Gender is a very public thing. There are males and there are females. They are (usually) very easy to tell apart. I was not happy living in the male gender role. I always felt different inside. I went in and out of depression since high school, until my separation with Christina. It took me so long to put two and two together, and to see that transsexuals are not freakish people. They are not like Rupaul, or like that character on The Rocky Horror Picture Show. They live day to day lives, and you've probably seen some of them and never thought a thing about them. The same way that people may look my way on the street when I'm walking the kids to school, or in a store shopping, and then look away. I've always been rather slim and short, and never had rugged facial features. That really helps me now. I would really love to have a job. Things go fine until they do a background check. Someday, I'll find a more open-minded employer.

I do have insurance at this point, though it's from the state. When Nikki and I finally get married, I could be on her insurance. She's very close to having a regular teaching position, since they're going to be firing the teacher in her classroom. They want Nikki to teach the class. So she'll soon be making a lot more money. As for me, I've been writing a lot lately, and I want to see if I can get a novel published. I've also considered starting my own business, fixing computers and such.

I do have quite a few good friends here. Some are transsexual, but many aren't. I know three mothers of transsexual children. Rachel and Josie are both nine years old, and Emerson is twelve. Josie is home-schooled, since their local school has a problem with her attending class as a girl, but the other two are able to go to school. They have all been saying they're a girl (and Emerson insisting he's a boy) since they could speak. This was unheard of ten years ago, but kids like this were always around. The world is slowly changing. When I was younger, there was barely any media coverage on transsexuality. Now there are specials on The Discovery Channel, and The Learning Channel, as well as episodes of The Tyra Banks Show and others. Many people will never accept or understand, but many others do. There are many crusaders (trans or not) of the rights of transsexuals. I don't wish to be one of them, though I applaud their efforts. I merely wish to live my life as the gender I feel inside. The ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act) in Tucson prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of gender identity. Previously, it only included race, ethnicity, religion, et al. (Though many employers can find another "reason" for firing (or not hiring) anyway.) Things change, albeit slowly.

As far as choice, I didn't choose this. Other than a choice to be happy or not, there is no choice. This is who I am inside. I can be me, or live a lie. I can live as a woman, or fight depression and anxiety for the rest of my life. Besides being without a job, I am happy. I love Nikki, I love our family, and I love my home and my friends. I'm so much more in touch with my feelings than I was before. Grandma said when she saw me a year ago, that she had never seen me talk so much or seem so happy. I am, very much so. I'm comfortable and at ease with myself. I'm living my life authentically. Like you said, there's no second chance in life. If I tried to be who everyone wants me to be, I would only live my life with regret and sadness.

I truly love you and Dad, my brother and sister, and grandparents, aunts and uncles. I can feel that so much more. And I feel so sad that so many of you cannot accept who I am. But just as I have no choice but to be who I am, you (all of you) have no choice but to feel the way you feel about it. Maybe someday, you'll see that I'm still here. I have the same interests, the same values, and the same wacky sense of humor. My gender is all that's changed. But yes, that is an awfully big change. I wish I could put an end to my family's pain, disappointment, and heartbreak. The only way for me to that would be to return to living a lie, the act that I had to play for so many years... and that would be so unhealthy for me. 'Devastating' would not even be a fitting word.

I love you, Ma. I love you all.

Love,

Amy

Success! (Blast From the Past Entry)

Here it is, my third and final entry in my "Name Change Saga." Quote unquote. I had the same problem in Michigan last summer, in getting a female designation on my driver license. You can read about it here. I've added my NY license near the bottom of this post. It hasn't expired yet, but the worker cut a notch off of it when I got my Michigan license. I guess you can't have a license in more than one state at a time. Too bad, I really like the way the photo came out.

Current mood: drained

I had a bad experience at the DMV a week ago. As you may know from my previous blogs, I have had my name legally changed to Amy. With the court order in hand, I went to the DMV in Medford. Bad move. The clerk said he had to talk to his supervisor, and to have a seat. We waited for 10 to 15 minutes. He came back with the supervisor and they said that in order to change the designation for "sex" on the license, they needed a letter from the surgeon who performed the sex reassignment surgery. That would be difficult as I haven't had that done! She was very rude when I told her that others have had the sex changed to F without a problem. She said that they were wrong for doing so, or something like that. I was seeing red. After all the time taken off of work so I can get this done, I get this nasty bitch trying to fuck it up. Like I'm really going to walk around with a license saying "Amy" and a female photo... with "Sex: M."

Then I went to get my Social Security card changed. The man there told me the same thing. I was very upset by this point. I called my therapist and she said that's the status quo with Social Security, but she was surprised about the DMV. She told me to to go to another DMV.

Two days ago, I went to the Amityville DMV. The man had some confusion with the court papers ("No divorce or marriage papers?"), and kept messing up the new name (the first time he kept the old name, and the second time he spelled my last name wrong), but they gave me the F with no problem! Yay! So I have this little paper interim license that I keep looking at constantly. I love it. My real license comes in two to three weeks. I can't wait to see the picture!

Then I went to my bank, and changed my name on my account. After that I went to my insurance company to change my name there as well. While I was there, I changed my address to the new Michigan address. It feels so good to just be myself. Something that should be taken for granted is instead something I had to work for. But it was well worth it. After five long years of heading down this path, I am finally free to be me.

Update! (Blast From the Past Entry)

Continued from yesterday, quite a monumental event in my life. Read on...

Current mood: ecstatic

Here's my update on the name change. Well, to make a long story short, it was approved! Yay! But to keep a long story long...

First, I went to Port Jefferson to get a certified copy of my birth certificate. The man behind the counter looked at me for a second when I gave him my (male) license. He seemed to be quite gay to me though, so I'm sure it didn't phase him. (LOL!) $10 and it was mine.

The rest was all done in Riverhead, which was pretty convenient for me. I had to go to the Office of the County Clerk to purchase an index number. That was $210 (up from $205 last year, when I got one for my divorce). Then I took all the papers over to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court I went to was demolished, so that got me a little panicky. But they pointed me to the new one. The clerk who took the papers from me actually made some changes for my benefit. The forms I found online were old. The new ones are gender neutral. Whenever something referred to my old name, I circled "he" because it had to do with a male name. He scratched that out & put "petitioner." That was pretty awesome. I really appreciated it.

I got the forms notarized right in the same building, and went upstairs to see "Fran." Fran looked the forms over and sent me over the Criminal Court building. It just so happens that Judge John J. Jones, Jr. is located in that building for some reason. Maybe all the J's were freaking the Supreme Court out for some strange reason. Unfortunately, I had to wait an hour and a half because they had already broke for lunch. I bought some Combo's at their snack shop, talked to Nikki on the payphone, and read my book.

Once they were back, I gave the judge the papers. He said, "This will just take a few minutes." He left the room & then came back. He was on a computer terminal next to the judge's chair. There was one part that scared me where he shook his head and sighed. But then he continued what he was doing. Then he gave me back the papers and said, "You can go back to Supreme Court now, and they'll finish processing the paperwork." No questions or anything! I looked at the order and yes, he had signed it! Damn, that was easy!

I went back to see Fran, and she made copies of everything. She was also on her computer for a bit. Then she sent me back to the Office of the County Clerk. They gave me a certified copy of the order, and directions to Suffolk Life (also in Riverhead). I paid Suffolk Life $10 to run the ad in their July 4th edition. Unfortunately, I think you need the Selden edition. I'm still trying to track that down. Maybe my parents have it (without them having read it!).

What happens now that the ad has run (hopefully)? Suffolk Life is sending me a document stating that the ad has been posted. I'm supposed to take this back down to the Office of the County Clerk, and then I'm done. My name will legally be Amy! They'll give me certified copies of a document stating my name has been changed. Then I'll go down to the DMV and change my license, title and registration. Then it's off to Social Security to change my social security card. I'll be doing all of this a week from today. I can't wait to finally get all these things changed. Then people can stop looking at me like I have two heads when I give them a male name or show them my license. I'll post again at some point to tell all of you how it went. I thank all of you who responded on my last blog. I really appreciate that.

Wish Me Luck! (Blast From the Past Entry)

I'm going to be posting a few "Blasts from the Pasts" in the next few days, reason being that they covered my name change and my experience with that. I was still legally married at the time of this writing, and separated for five years. My divorce was final in October of 2008. My ex-wife still doesn't know that my name had been changed.

I was so excited and thrilled to be changing my name. For a lot of people, this would seem like a nuisance, but oddly enough, I enjoyed every minute of it. Tomorrow's post will tell of how everything went.

Current mood: excited

I'm going to court tomorrow to put in for my name change! Yay!!!

I've already filled out the petition and the name change order. I have to run to my public storage unit tonight to get the child support order from five years ago. For some reason, they need proof of that, and some kind of statement from me. Tomorrow, I have to run to the ATM and take out some money ($210 in court fees!). Then I have to go to the Port Jefferson Village Hall to get my birth certificate. I get this for a mere pittance of $10. Then I bring everything to the Suffolk County Clerk in Riverhead. They give me an index number, and then I head to the Supreme Court, also in Riverhead. Who knows how long I'll be waiting there, but I either see a judge or he just signs the thing. Then, I have to get something published in a newspaper (probably Newsday) that I'm getting my name changed, and I get some kind of document from the newspaper saying that it was published. I run this back to court and then I'm done!

I'm so excited! I just hope I don't have problems because I am still legally married. Plus, I am changing everything. First, last, even middle name (Jean, chosen by my sweetheart!). Everybody who reads this, please wish me luck and lots of positive thoughts! I'll post again and let all of you know how it went.

Meanings

Some people try to seek some meaning on certain choices I've made. I'm talking about details (though important ones) like, "Why did you choose the name, 'Amy?'" In many cases, there is no reason. But in other cases, like the example above, there is an underlying reason. Ooh! Ooh! What could it be? Well shaddap, and I'll tell you.

I took great care when picking out my first name. After all, not many people get to choose their own name! My name is one that I chose for my daughter. Her mother didn't like it. Brittany was the name chosen instead. (Is it perhaps a subconscious suggestion that made me change my name to one I knew my ex doesn't like? Hmmm... NAH!) It doesn't end there. Amethyst has always been my favorite gem. So yeah, Amy, amethyst, you can see where this is going. There was also a comic book that I absolutely adored entitled, "Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld." It was DC Comics' attempt at reaching a female audience. Well, I was already reading titles from DC such as The New Teen Titans and and Legion of Super-Heroes, as well as a slew of Marvel titles. but I loved Amethyst!

The main character in Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld is an average teenage girl named Amy. When she enters the Gemworld, she is all of a sudden an adult, as well as a princess. and has magical powers. Ummm hello? She turns into a woman... and there is magic... I was sold. Anyway, no I did not name myself after the comic book. I've loved the name way before then.

My last name is interesting, I think. My mother had told me several times that she didn't want me to bring "shame" on the family name, when referring to me behaving or appearing in any way feminine. So I figured, let's change that too. "Amy" means friend or friendly, while my last name is German for "heart." Friendly heart. The main reason I don't put my last name up here is because my soon-to-be mother-in-law (yay!) is a freak of nature and likes to google me and stalk me. Let's see, do you know the actress who played the mother on Growing Pains? Her first name is Joanna, and her last name is... well, the same as mine. Look here on IMDB if you don't know who she is. I just don't want any search engine indexes pointing to my full name here, at least for now. Since I'm looking for employment, it might be a good idea to keep them from googling me and seeing this blog as well. My Facebook and MySpace accounts are private, but I want to keep this blog open.

My middle name, Jean, was chosen by my sweetheart, Nikki. An homage of sorts to Jean Grey, who was at one time the most powerful of the X-Men, as Phoenix. (Never mind X-Men: The Last Stand, they didn't do Phoenix justice at all.) Why do we keep coming back to comics? Oh yes, and Skylar's middle name is also Jean.

Some unrelated current events. I walked another three miles today, this time pushing Skylar in the stroller. We had to get crickets for our tree frogs. I did this a month or so ago, so I figured let's go again. It gets Skylar outdoors for awhile, I need the exercise, and hey, y'know... crickets. I wore a newer, softer pair of socks and guess what? No blisters. Yayyyy!

I forgot to mention in my last post that they weighed me at the clinic, with a result of 164 pounds. That was on day 4 of my diet. Only one other time have I weighed this much. It was back in 2001, when my ex was pregnant with Brittany. She was craving ice cream and Taco Bell non-stop, and hey I love that stuff too! I gained 30 pounds. It was pretty much gone two years later. This time, it's all my fault. That and those damn hormone meds.

My hunger pains weren't as bad yesterday (which was day 5). I think my stomach has shrunk a little. I had dinner at 6 PM, and then it was after midnight, and I still wasn't hungry. I had my last protein bar anyway, because I don't want to eat too soon before going to bed, and who knows how long I would remain unhungry? I'm a night owl, and I want to eat dinner with the family. Right now, I wake up at 12 noon. Yeah, I know. So I have a protein bar between 12 and 1 PM, eat dinner at 5 or 6 PM, then have another bar at 11 PM or so.

Oh yeah, I have a new layout. Does anyone like it/hate it? The old one had all this unused space on the sides. I hate that. Now with more room for text, I enlarged the font size and bolded it. I figured it would be make easier and funner to read.

Until next time...!
