Meet Fizban, My Green Iguana!
Fast forward to today. My sweetie bought me a new one! In keeping with tradition, I named him after a wizard as well. Fizban is a character from the Dragonlance series of books. That Fizban is ancient beyond anyone's knowledge, but my Fizban is about two and a half months old. He's still quite nervous when I pick him up, but he no longer tries to get away unless someone else comes near or makes a sudden or loud noise (sigh... kids). He's adorable! He eats out of my hand and is always on the go when I take him out of his tank. He's growing quick! Every day he looks bigger, or I see more of those cool spikes where I hadn't seen them before.
When doing some research, I found out quite a few new things compared to what I had known in the mid-90's. I also found out why Merlin died. In addition to a basking lamp (which provides standard UVA rays like any common light bulb), iguanas need a bulb that emits UVB rays. These are both produced by the sun, and iguanas need both. UVB allows them to utilize the calcium in their diet. Without these rays, the calcium can build up into... drumroll now... calcium deposits within the body, such as bladder stones. When an iguana doesn't get enough calcium (or be able to use it), it gets... metabolic bone disease (MBD for short). I always noticed that Merlin's legs were held at an odd angle, and it had some toes that were just bent around the wrong way. Also, he didn't grow. After two years, I should've needed two hands to hold him, but he was barely bigger than Fizban is now in these pictures. Unfortunately, they didn't know that much about UVB at the time. I had a couple books on green iguanas, but they made no mention of it.
What does Fizban eat? What's best for him is certain leafy greens, such as collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens... as well as green beans, prickly pear cactus leaves, parsnips, snap peas, alfalfa, and different kinds of squash. He can also eat fruit. The vegetables are best, but he loves watermelon and mango! He eats those two fruits ravenously. It's pretty funny to watch.
I have him in a little tank right now (29 gallon) until the 55 gallon ones go on sale at Petco (for a dollar a gallon!). In no time at all, though, no conventional tank will be big enough for Fizban. See what he'll look like in three to five years:
Yes, they can grow from five to six feet long! Where to keep such a beast? Why, right here, in our mini-backyard of sorts:
Without the bike, of course! With the exception of the low fence dead ahead, it's pretty well enclosed. Fizban can roam loose in this area, but we need to make sure he stays in, and something like a bobcat stays out! We're going to buy some coated chain link fencing to go over those areas (hope the neighbors don't complain!). Fence or mesh is good, to let in some natural sunlight (though that only happens in the morning), and it should be coated so he can't scratch himself on the fence if climbing or rubbing his nose on it. We'd remove the rocks, as he can scrape his belly on those sharp things. I want to borrow some large rocks and branches from Mother Nature for him to climb on. We'll still need a basking light and a UVB lamp out there, since the sun won't shine into the yard nearly enough for him.
The only thing is, once it starts getting under seventy degrees at night, we'll have to find alternate accommodations for him - probably in our room. This awesome iguana owner (female, natch) has a series of racks nailed into the wall at high levels. She has the lights hanging up there, and it's food bowls and such on the racks. The racks went all around the room, in a spiral fashion. Pretty cool idea!
Oh, one last thing: I know I've been calling Fizban a 'he,' and he's (did it again!) named after a male wizard. Well, it's impossible to tell what sex they are until they reach sexual maturity - about one a half years old. I call him... well, him, both because I don't want to be calling my adorable little lizard an 'it,' and because I thought Merlin was male. The man at the pet store told me he was a boy when I bought him - at 2 or 3 months old. Amateur. So I was used to calling him 'Merlin Boy,' 'Green Boy,' and such. It just comes natural now. Female iguanas are usually blessed with a calmer temperament (though both are easy-going if you train them right), but they tend to have health issues due to their egg-laying. Constipation, loss of protein, and other problems may occur. One can get them spayed at a veterinarian that knows what they're doing with reptiles.

Fizban is awesome. I love my little one!

Mac Venomous Villains STASH

I'm going crazy. . .
I’m a person who never start to apologize
I’ll shout even louder at you every time
There is no way to stop our madness
I don’t know what to do
I don’t even know why we started this
No matter what I say now,
You won’t listen
You don’t believe me
The love in our hearts when we first met,
Where has it gone to?
Have we got rid of it?
(Chorus)
I dislike how our love has changed
I’m tired of repeating our arguments every day
Much worse than when we we’re alone,
Being stuck in an endless time
I don’t want to blame you for that
I guess we are going crazy
I’m going crazy crazy
In our love, we just going crazy
I said, we are over
But that’s not what my heart wants to say
Sitting and hesitating for what I did
For a moment, I was like an idiot regretting
(that I did you wrong)
We are both going to hurt, every day
I don’t know what to do
I don’t even know why we started this relationship
No matter what I say now,
You won’t listen
You don’t believe me
The love in our hearts when we first met,
Where has it gone to?
Have we got rid of it?
(Chorus)
In our love, we just going crazy
I can do it
There is nothing that can drive me insane
I’m still loving you
My tears are still not enough
Even when it’s hurting a lot
I’ll try finding myself back,
Good bye
(Chorus)
I'm going crazy crazy...

Hot n' Sweaty
As for the wagon, the one we got in the middle of August already broke. The capstan (I think that's what it's called) came off the top of the... uhhh... wow I'm at a loss at how to explain this. Okay, listen (or read) carefully. Each front wheel is attached to a metal pole. The pole goes through a hole in the base of the wagon. The capstan (?) is attached to the top of the pole to keep it from falling out of the bottom of the base. Capstan-type thing went bye bye. I have no idea where it went. That caused the wheel (and pole) to come out of the base when it was lifted up off the ground, like going up or down a curb for example. Most annoying. Luckily, we got a replacement plan for $15. The wagon cost about $60, so everything came to approximately $75. We got a free wagon, so we saved $45 so far. This one is green, for some reason. No trouble going up and down the curbs now! But one of the front wheels is wiggling a whole lot all of a sudden. I wonder what they would say if they knew I pulled the thing for six miles a day? I usually have the car for a day out of the week (on average) to take the kids or myself to appointments and such, so we're talking about 24 miles a week. Wow!
We have them put together the wagon at the store, since one needs a lot of tools to put that sucker together. We're missing one of the tools needed. The first time we had them do it, they messed up. They said, "Come back in 24 hours." We paid them the $10 fee for assembling the wagon, and came back the next day. Slightly over 24 hours. The wagon was not ready. They refunded me my $10, and I waited there while they scrambled to get the thing together. Ten or fifteen minutes later, the wagon was rolled out.
Now, with this replacement, again they told me, "Come back in 24 hours." I did so, and the wagon was once more not ready. The lady at customer service looked at my receipt and nonchalantly said, "They should've told you, 'Come back in 24 hours and after five o'clock.' They get real busy."
Huh??? Give me the damn wagon, ya %$#@&! Well okay, I didn't say that. They told me to come back in an hour. I was about eight miles from home in heavy traffic, and by the time I got home, it would be time to come back, so I stopped at a Bruegger's Bagels and got a bagel with cream cheese and lox. Do you know they don't call it 'lox' over here? They just call it salmon. A bagel with cream cheese and salmon. It just doesn't sound right. When I asked them for cream cheese and lox, they were like, "What? Ohhh, salmon?" Well, yeah... nova lox salmon! It's lox, what's the matter with you people? Even Cafe World (Facebook app) calls it 'lox.' See?
The other funny thing is that New York seems to be the only place you get food 'to stay.' Everywhere else, they ask you, "Do you want that for here or to go?" I go, "To stay." They just stare at me. Okay, for here, geez! I was born and raised in New York, dammit! We understand go and stay. Simple instructions, like you'd give a dog. Once you start saying 'for here,' well that's just too existential for my tastes when all I want is to sit down and eat a bagel.
But I digress. I went back to the store... in an hour. Not ready. They was some shouting back and forth over a walkie talkie. Yup, no phones. Walkie talkies. Who rang up the order yesterday? Why did he not tell the back to assemble the wagon? Get him over here and have him drop and give me twenty, etc etc etc. Give me the stupid wagon! Ten minutes later they roll out the wagon. Thank you, sheesh.
That's my story about the wagons. I'm sure none of you are reading anymore, so here's a secret nobody will ever see...
No, I have not been drinking. Good night! (or day)

Liz and Us at The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
So this was back in July, when we went to The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Liz was kind enough to give us the guided tour, which we were unfortunately late for. We semi-rushed from exhibit to exhibit, checking out the local wildlife in this very interesting zoo of sorts. I'll leave it up to pictures and captions now.

A Dream of Every Day Tragedy
Oddly enough, I wasn't in this dream. It was about a young man and a young woman. The woman wasn't me, and the man didn't even resemble what I looked like in the Before Time. Having a dream without myself included is unusual for me, but not unheard of.
There was a man who was falling in love with a woman, and it seemed as if they were about to start dating, but she was very reluctant. She came from a wealthy family, and he lived a modest life. She, at least, still lived with her parents. This young man, the woman, and her mother were walking around in a department store, looking for some video game system called "Shift 3." (Shift 2 was the only one in stock.) The mother was making side comments all along about how he wanted to use her daughter to "climb the social ladder." She kept telling her mother to stop it, and he tried his best to ignore it. Her mother soon said she had an appointment to go to, and left. (I suppose she came in her own car, as did her daughter. He had walked.)
As they were leaving the store, the woman told the man that they would be better off being friends. He really loved her, but he was decidedly optimistic. "Maybe our friendship will grow into something more," he said. She tried to give him a casual smile, and said, "Who knows?" She then got in her car, and he was walking away. He was a block away when he heard a loud crash.
He turned around to look, and a big truck had slammed into her car as she was backing out. A police officer was on the scene, and told her to stay put while he called an ambulance. She did get out though, since her torso was in flames. She rolled on the ground until the flames were out, and then laid on her back. It all happened so fast. The man who loved her finally made it to her side. People were gathering around.
He told her, "You're going to be okay, you're going to be okay...!"
She said, "No... I won't."
He knew she was right.
"I love you," she said.
He was so surprised to hear her say those words. After a moment's breath, he said, "I love you too."
She told him, "We'll never do 'it.'"
He said, "It doesn't matter." She smiled and closed her eyes. And then she was gone.
I woke up crying. My Nikki was safe and snoring by my side. I continued crying though, because although this story wasn't real, in a way... it is.
I didn't know these people, but these people are everywhere. Live long enough, and you will lose people you love. And you'll always think, "I never got a chance to marry her," or "I never got to raise a family with him," or "I won't ever go with her on that tropical vacation we wanted," or "I'll never get to see him have kids, and them be my grandkids," .... or "I never got to tell her how I feel."
I laid there in bed, and whispered softly, to nobody, and everybody, "I'm sorry. I know you don't know me, and it can never be enough, but I'm sorry." I then rolled over and held my girl, savoring every moment.
This dream was a reminder to me, and one I thought I should share. Cherish the ones you love. Cherish every day you spend with them. Because it all happens so fast. They can be gone in the blink of an eye. Love them. And don't ever hold back.
