Brooke Mueller to Charlie Sheen: Do NOT Go There!

How do you satirize a man whose life has already turned into a perpetual comedy skit? That’s for Comedy Central to figure out: on Tuesday that cable channel announced that Charlie Sheen, who has been an ex-star of “Two and a Half Men” for so long now that we can’t remember why he’s still famous, will be the subject-cum-victim of the next installment of its popular series of televised roasts.

The “Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen,” where celebrity guests and comedians will say to Mr. Sheen the things that they’ve already been saying behind his back and run catch phrases like “tiger blood” and “winning!” into the ground, will be filmed in Los Angeles on Sept. 10 and broadcast on Sept. 19, the channel said on Tuesday.

Mr. Sheen, who follows in the footsteps of immortal roastees like Donald Trump, David Hasselhoff and Flavor Flav, said in a statement: “You could say I’ve been providing kindling for this roast for a while. It’s time to light it up. It’s going to be epic.” Comedy Central has already settled on a Twitter hashtag — #SheenRoast — for the event, but no celebrity roasters were immediately announced; we’ll assume the “Two and a Half Men” co-creator Chuck Lorre won’t be making a trip to the dais.

Massive Dust Storm Sweeps Through Phoenix Area

A massive dust storm descended on the Phoenix area on Tuesday night, drastically reducing visibility and delaying flights as strong winds downed trees and caused power outages for thousands of residents.

The dust cloud that hit the valley had originated in an afternoon storm in the Tucson area before moving north across the desert, said National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Iniguez. Before bearing down on the Phoenix valley, radar data showed the storm's towering dust wall had reached as high as 8,000 to 10,000 feet, he said.

Once it neared the valley, the cloud had fallen to some 5,000 feet, according to the weather service. KSAZ-TV in Phoenix reported the storm appeared to be roughly 50 miles wide in some spots. It briefly blanketed the city's downtown at around nightfall.

"This was pretty significant," Iniguez told The Associated Press. "We heard from a lot of people who lived here for a number of storms and this was the worst they'd seen."

The storm was part of the Arizona monsoon season, which typically starts in mid-June and lasts through Sept. 30.

The National Weather Service says strong winds with gusts of more than 60 mph rapidly moved the dust cloud northwest through Phoenix and the surrounding cities of Avondale, Tempe and Scottsdale. More than a dozen communities in the area also were placed under a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m.

Some 8,000 Salt River Project utility customers were left without power, KNXV-TV reported late Tuesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on its website that because of low visibility in the area, no Phoenix-bound flights were allowed to leave Las Vegas or Los Angeles airports until 9 p.m., and flights at the airport were grounded for about an hour.

Noel Gallagher to release two solo albums

Noel Gallagher has announced he will release his debut solo album this autumn with a second LP already recorded. The album, the first music Gallagher has produced for three years following the acrimonious Oasis split from his brother Liam, will be called Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and will be released on 17 October.

The album was recorded in London earlier this year and completed in Los Angeles. It features 10 new tracks, produced by Gallagher and David Sardy, the producer of two Oasis albums, Don't Believe the Truth in 2005 and Dig Out Your Soul in 2008. It will be released through Gallagher's own label, Sour Mash Records.

Gallagher will tour the album this autumn, hoping for better sales than Liam enjoyed with his Beady Eye debut, Different Gear, Still Speeding, which peaked at No 3 in the UK charts upon its release in February.

At a press conference at the Electric Cinema in London's Notting Hill, Gallagher also revealed he has completed a second album, again recorded in the UK. It does not yet have a title but involves a collaboration with psychedelic outfit Amorphous Androgynous and will be released in 2012.

Gallagher talked for the first time about the dramatic bust up between him and his brother Liam, just before Oasis were due on stage in Paris for the Rock en Seine festival in August 2009. Asked why he had had enough of Oasis, Gallagher answered. "I hadn't had enough of Oasis, I had had enough of Liam." Gallagher described a fierce, if vaguely comic, argument with his brother, which saw Liamentering the dressing room "wielding a guitar like an axe".

The first single from Noel Gallagher's album will be announced shortly. The record will feature the Crouch End Festival Chorus and the Wired Strings.

The tracklisting for Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds:

Everybody's on the Run

Dream On

If I Had a Gun...

The Death of You and Me

(I Wanna Live in a Dream in My) Record Machine

AKA ... What a Life

Soldier Boys and Jesus Freaks

AKA ... Broken Arrow

(Stranded On) The Wrong Beach

Rupert Murdoch could meet phone hack victims

As pressure continue to grew on the embattled parent company of the News of the World, alleged victims asked for the chance to speak directly to the media owner.

Graham Foulkes, whose son was killed in the July 7 bombings, was told his phone may have been hacked in the days following the terrorist attacks which left 52 dead across London.

Speaking on the Today programme, he said: "I'd really like to meet [Murdoch] and have a very in-depth conversation with him about responsibility and the power that he has and how it should be used appropriately. I would very much like to meet him and have that conversation."

He added: "It fills me with horror. We were in a very dark place. You think it's as dark as it can get and then you realise there's someone out there who can make it darker."

Simon Greenberg, director of corporate affairs at News International, said a potential meeting was “certainly something we would consider”.

Mr Foulkes is one of a “handful” of July 7 families who police believe may have had their phones targeted by investigators working for the News of the World.

He was told by a senior police officer yesterday that both his mobile and his ex-directory landline, which was known to only a small group, may have been hacked.

Mr Greenberg said News International was in “fully co-operative mode” and said that if the allegations related to Milly Dowler and the July 7 families were true it would be considered “wrong doing” by the company.

News International was "shocked and appalled" by the July 7 allegations, as it was with claims that Milly Dowler's phone had been hacked, Mr Greenberg said.

Angelina Jolie and Sarah Jessica Parker ranked Hollywood's richest women

Angelina Jolie and Sarah Jessica Parker have topped Forbes magazine's annual list of the highest paid female actors with estimated earnings of $30m (£18.6m) a year.

Familiar figures such as Jennifer Aniston ($28m), Reese Witherspoon (also $28m) and Julia Roberts ($20m) complete the top five, but there is room in the top 10 for fresher faces. Kristen Stewart is at No 6 with $20m, thanks to the success of the Twilight films, while Katherine Heigl finds herself at No 7 following paydays for turkeys such as Killers and The Ugly Truth. Cameron Diaz and Sandra Bullock round out the top 10 with $18m and $15m respectively.

Forbes conducted its research for the period between May 2010 and May 2011. Jolie is believed to be on top largely due to films such as Salt and The Tourist, both of which performed well at the box office. Parker reportedly receives healthy payments when Sex and the City reruns are broadcast around the world, while the most recent film in the series' big-screen translation pulled in a respectable $290m.

The list may look rather different in 2012. Witherspoon's latest film How Do You Know and Roberts's new movie Larry Crowne both proved to be box-office flops.

While they are probably not short of pocket change, the women named by Forbes are mostly trailing after their male counterparts. The men's list was published in September and saw Johnny Depp on top with a staggering $75m in annual earnings. Ben Stiller ($53m), Tom Hanks ($45m) and Adam Sandler ($40m) all earned more than Jolie.

Daniel Radcliffe reveals problem with alcohol

Looks like Harry Potter has faced more demons than just Voldemort. In an interview with U.K.’s GQ, Daniel Radcliffe revealed that he’s been sober since last summer after realizing he was too attached to alcohol. Said the How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying Broadway star, “I became reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff … There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me.”

Radcliffe said he began drinking whiskey on the set of 2009′s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but was able to avoid paparazzi shots that would have painted the young star as a party boy. “I really got away with that because there were so many instances when a paparazzi shot like that could have been taken,” he told the magazine.

Luckily, unlike many other young Hollywood stars who battle their vices for years, Radcliffe became aware that he was headed down a dangerous path after he completed filming on July 15′s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2. “There’s no shame in enjoying a quiet life,” he said. “And that’s been the realization of the past few years for me … As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn’t work for me. I’d just rather sit at home and read, or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh.”

Radcliffe’s revelations paint a picture that’s a far cry from the squeaky-clean image he’s developed since breaking out as a pre-teen in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But it’s also respectable that the actor is willing to admit to his problems — here’s hoping other young stars who find themselves struggling with alcohol or other substances can use Radcliffe as an example. As he proves, not every young star with problems needs to turn out like Lindsay Lohan.

Do you respect Radcliffe that much more, PopWatchers?

Should Breastfeeding Be Allowed In Public?

It's the question many are buzzing about, after last week a Detroit bus driver threatened to kick a nursing mother off the bus unless she covered up.

The event has reignited the breastfeeding-in-public debate: Is it indecent exposure, or necessary given the important health benefits of nursing?

The Associated Press reported:

Breast-fed babies suffer fewer illnesses such as diarrhea, earaches and pneumonia, because breast milk contains antibodies that help fend off infections. They're also less likely to develop asthma, or even to become fat later in childhood. Nursing mothers shed pregnancy pounds faster, and if they breast-feed long enough can decrease their risk of breast or ovarian cancer.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says breast milk alone provides optimal nutrition for babies for about the first six months, the time when most babies begin solid foods, and that breast-feeding should continue to age 1.

What do you think? Does it make you uncomfortable to see women breastfeed in public? Should there be laws for, or against it?

Bombardier to cut 1,400 train jobs

British manufacturing suffered a major blow today when the last UK train-making company Bombardier announced more than 1,400 job losses.

The Derby-based firm had hoped to win a multimillion-pound order for 1,200 new train carriages as part of the £6 billion Thameslink main line rail project.

But the Government decided last month to make German company Siemens the Thameslink preferred bidder, prompting today's job-loss announcement affecting 446 permanent staff at Derby and 983 temporary staff.

Bombardier said it was "very disappointed" about the redundancies and said it was "a sad time" for Derby where rail work dates back to 1840 and where 3,000 people work.

One Bombardier worker at Derby said he felt "let down and betrayed", while transport unions said the decision in favour of Siemens was "a scandal" and "misguided".

Labour said it was not too late for the Government to review the Thameslink contract, which will see the new carriages built in Germany rather than at Derby.

But Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said altering the Siemens decision was "not an option" and that Bombardier had informed the Department for Transport in May that it would have to make more than 1,000 redundancies regardless of winning the Thameslink contract.

Mr Hammond added that under European procurement law the Government had had no choice but to announce Siemens as the preferred bidder.

He said he and Business Secretary Vince Cable had written to the Prime Minister "on the issue of whether the UK is making the best use of the application of EU procurement rules".

Bombardier had been counting on getting the Thameslink order, having recently lost out to Hitachi of Japan for a big inter-city express train contract.

Workers at Derby are now completing orders for London Underground carriages and for diesel trains for the London Midland main line train company.

Most of this work will be completed by the end of September this year.

Francis Paonessa, president of Bombardier's passengers division for the UK, said: "The culmination and successful delivery of these projects and the loss of the Thameslink contract, which would have secured workload at this site, means that it is inevitable that we must adjust capacity in line with economic reality."

He went on: "We regret this outcome but without new orders we cannot maintain the current level of employment and activity at Derby."

Speaking at the entrance to the Derby site today, Colin Walton, chairman of Bombardier Transportation in the UK, said he was "very disappointed" about announcing the redundancies.

He said it was a blow to UK manufacturing and added: "Obviously we're still trying to rationalise the reasons why and clearly it does seem to go against what we're told about how manufacturing is important to the UK and it's a rebalancing of the economy."

Also speaking at the gates to Bombardier today, Darren Barber, an electrician and union representative at the plant, said: "It's a massive blow. I don't feel angry but I do feel let down. I feel betrayed, I feel sad and not just for myself - that's for everybody."

Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT transport union, said: "It's a scandal that the Government are colluding with the EU in a policy of industrial vandalism that would wipe out train building in the nation that gave the railways to the world."

Len McCluskey, general secretary of the Unite union, said: "The situation at Bombardier has reached crisis point. The Government must now act swiftly and decisively to save Britain's last train manufacturer.

"The dire consequences of the Government's misguided decision to exclude Bombardier from the contract to build carriages for the Thameslink project is now becoming a reality."

Gerry Doherty, leader of the TSSA rail union, said: "Ministers must abandon their role as Pontius Pilate and stop standing idly by while train-making slowly bleeds to death in the UK.

"They owe it to British manufacturing in general, and the people of Derby in particular, to reverse their decision to award this huge contract to Siemens of Germany."

Shadow transport secretary Maria Eagle said: "This is a black day for the only company which designs, builds, maintains and exports trains from the UK.

"The loss of the Thameslink contract has dealt a body blow to the UK rail manufacturing sector from which it is not clear it can recover."

She went on: "There is a long way to go in this procurement process which has only reached preferred bidder stage. It is unbelievable that the Transport Secretary has already washed his hands of the situation and is claiming that there is nothing he can do except write to the Prime Minister about his own decision."

Ms Eagle and shadow business secretary John Denham have written to the Prime Minister urging him to review the decision.
